Hello Gents
This post is intended as the launch of a small, but important, campaign to prod, challenge, cajole or otherwise convince a fellow has-been to join us in May. Some of you know him, some of you are more fortunate. In any event, please let me introduce Kurt Luoni, aka Bone. He is a good dude. Bone is a life-long athlete, the finisher of countless triathlons, bike and foot races. I've known him since 1995 - some of you have known him much longer.
Bone lives in Colorado with his beautiful 3+ daughter. He is recently divorced and starting some aspects of his life anew. It's been a difficult year. I had already started trying to convince him that this ride was something he needed to do - and then I fortuitously ran into him at a Starbucks in Encinitas. I am certain that the Application for Employment in his hand was being used strictly for scratch paper.
So here's what I'm thinking. I've been in Bone's shoes. Figuratively - not literally. I think a ride down the coast is exactly what he needs at this point in life. He told me he is interested - but also offered up lots of reasons why it would be difficult. So, I thought I'd put it out there: if you know Bone and want to encourage him - feel free to do so here. If you don't know him and want to encourage him, even better. And if you want to encourage him to just stay home and sulk - that's cool too. But ultimately - and you need to be honest with yourself - if Bone doesn't go, then who will we make fun of instead?
Come on Kurt. Saddle up.

Kicking back, feet up on the couch, a box of bob-bons in one hand, the remote in the other – could there be anything better? How about 500 miles in 5-days, bad food, lumpy mattresses, and wet, stinky bike shorts from yesterday’s ride. Five days of bonding with your old friends, and the ones that you just made – maybe there is something better.
Besides, Carter can only take so much battering for his relentless instances to tell the same stories of his long gone youth – for the thousandth time. Someone else has to take some of the blows.
I’ve spoken with Kurt, and let him know that the best way to get over his evil soon to be ex-wife is to come on a ride where the entire group could care-less about his emotional stability, and will do their very best to drive him to the very brink of despair. I think he’s going to try and make it…
